Book Recommendations – Reviews

On this page I’m going to tell you about some of my favorite books. It’s an eclectic mix – on a number of subjects. But you may find something of interest:

THE BEGINNERS GUIDE TO SHAMANIC JOURNEYING - a CD by Sandra Ingerman (available thru Sounds True)

This is a great intro to the the philosophy and practice of Shamanic Journeying. What I like best about the tools offered here is the drumming session at the end – where the listener
gets the opportunity to take inner spiritual journeys again and again.
I find this to be an excellent compliment to meditative practice; it offers much fo the same benefits but, in many ways, is more enjoyable. This is a CD that I regularly recommend to my clients.

THE POWER OF FOCUSING
by Ann Weiser Cornell, Phd

This book is exactly what I’ve been looking for! It brings together the skills I’ve learned as a Life Coach with a form of Energy Psychology that is inspiring, easy to follow, applicable to all of life’s challenges, and deeply compassionate. I’m writing this review at the end of 2008 and have to say: THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I’VE READ THIS YEAR! Never before have I come across a self help book that has delivered on its promises so fully. After writing this review, I intend to begin pursuing training in this wonderful set of skills so that I can use it in my coaching practice. Kudos to the author. Very well done.

SOUL MISSION, LIFE VISION
by Alan Seale

Alan Seale’s handbook is all about discovering and living our Soul’s Mission. It’s an excellent compiling of various spiritual teachings and practices (lots of exercises) that has drawn into one source work much of the teachings on energy and awakening consciousness vibrant in today’s self empowerment culture. I highly recommend this work for its honesty and usefuleness.

UNLOCK YOUR INTUITION
by Andrea Hess

The author of this book makes quite a claim: If you follow the exercises and directions here, you’ll be able to open up your own intuition. Usually, I’m skeptical about such claims. But, I have to say – it works! In the short time it takes to get through this read, you’ll learn some basic dowsing, energy charging, and
Spirit Guide work. The reader can pick and choose which of the approaches they wish to use. But I recommend trying it all. Certainly, Ms. Hess offers her teachings from a place of integrity and kindness of Heart. I rank this up there with my two other favorites: YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT TO DO and INTUITION WORKOUT.

YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT TO DO
by Sharon Franquemont

This is a great, fun journey into developing personal (and group) intuition. The book is full of visualization exercises, quotes from other writers, and indepth explanations of the process.
I’ve also given a link to the author’s web site under the Links listing.

THE NINE MODERN DAY MUSES
by Jill Badonsky

“Muses” is a delight! It takes you on a romp thru the creative process – adding humor ( lots of it) and insights that will be helpful to anyone who is creative.

ORTHODOXY
by G.K. Chesterton

This classic collection of essays by the writer of The Father Brown Mysteries is filled with revelations. Of particular interest is the piece titled “The Ethics of Elfland.” That essay changed my life.

BREAKING THE RULES
by Kurt Wright

An important presentation of basic coaching principles ( with a unique slant ) that will be of great value to anyone seeking self improvement. It’s not just about coaching, but is more about life defining ways of viewing yourself and the world.

PETALS OF GRACE
by Sai Maa Lakshmi Devi

I purchased this book after watching an online interview with Sai Maa. A friend of mine had gone to one of the workshops led by two of her master teachers and came back raving about her “experiences”. My subsequent positive impressions from watching the taped interview prompted me to search for “more”. I admit, I had ordered Petals of Grace in the hope that it would provide various self-help techniques. While there was some of that in the book, the real value, for me, was in the words of inspiration that Sai Maa offers. Her writing (and I’m sure her live teachings,as well) have a way of touching deep places in this reader. She reminds us of who we are and what we are capable of – and, as we follow her writing, lights go on inside the heart.
I’ve given this review five stars because it warrants that. I’m no Sai Maa pupil – not part of her organisation; but I will admit, I’m quickly becoming a big fan. And, Oh boy! – wait til you get to Chapter Nineteen.
